Why Change Education?

We are heading towards Education 3.0. As every sector of the professional world continues to adopt new technologies and techniques, traditional education will follow in order to keep up with its rapidly changing environment. But why? Why must the education sector change? “Why fix what’s not broken?”

As stated in some of our previous articles (below), there are many foundational problems with “Traditional” and Online learning. We are setting out to build Mapedia with the sole purpose of addressing these issues to provide access to seamless learning for all motivated individuals in the world. By giving the power of education to a community, and each individual in the community, we can fundamentally change the way learners grow.

Here are the main reasons WHY we are building Mapedia.org.

Democratisation of learning

We want to make learning a non issue, accessible to anyone regardless of their background, financial status, goals or even amount of time they can dedicate. We believe that learning should not require a huge amount of willpower or discipline, but rather be an effortless practice that can be done whenever one desires. Acquired skills and knowledge must also be recognised in the real world, which is why alternatives to paid certifications or degrees must be developed.

Desire to improve current education systems

Traditional education systems are severely outdated and flawed — yet they remain the core standard for nearly all of the western civilisation. From a young age, students become victims to a one size fits all solution with a lack of resources, a lack of access, and no real chance for each individual to continuously learn and explore their topics of interest. If we can’t change this system — maybe we can beat it? We want Mapedia to be a place where students are actually able to feed their motivations and desires to explore and experience knowledge growth. Education is so often seen and interpreted as a place where curiosity goes to die, we want to change this perception.

Resolving our own pain points

We have gone through the trials and tribulations of learning. After funnelling through the traditional education system and exploring online learning from a young age — we have identified and directly experienced the pains. We have had teachers/professors/instructors that have discouraged our motivation to learn. We’ve taken online courses that haven’t taught us anything new. We’ve gone through youtube playlists that serve mostly as self promotion tools, and blogs that were too dense to extrapolate from. We have wasted time by struggling to find the next resource to continue learning a topic. We have wasted motivation on materials that weren’t designed for our current needs. And we have wasted money on bootcamps that didn’t accelerate us as advertised. We want the current and next generations to LEARN — not waste time and energy trying to learn, as we have done time and time over.

Desire to help others learn

Enough said. As much as we want to create this positive learning experience for ourselves to salvage our own learning pains, we want to share this beauty with as many people as we can! To us, every student we can help learn something they truly WANT to learn is considered a success.

To be a part of an impactful learning community

After seeing so many incredible feats accomplished by decentralised groups of talented and creative individuals, we’ve decided this is the best way to combat the build of our solution. We want to be a part of something bigger! Rather than building a platform and deciding every detail, we want our users to decide how things should operate and how they should receive their value. We want to build WITH our community, not FOR our users.
